Bass, How Low Can You Go - The Story Of Sugarhill House Band Bassist Doug Wimbish By JayQuan

Speaking of a national treasure... Hartford's own Doug Wimbish was interviewed by JayQuan in January 2006. The importance of Doug within the history of Hip Hop and the various genres that followed, is not out there.
I saw some Hip Hop conference or something happening at Trinty College and it's a shame the younger people putting on these things don't know who they could tap into right in their own back yard.

Great interview with information you might not have known.

track = "The Message – Definitely. That melody line I came up with, even thought I don’t get credited with it. That was an interesting time. That was the song that turned everything upside down!! We worked on that record. Everything stopped when we started on that song. When Sylvia smelled a hit all other recordings stop, and everyone had to wait till that song was done. Me Skip (McDonald) and Ed Fletcher (Duke Bootee) were all listening to "My Life In The Bush of Ghosts" by Brian Eno and smoking weed. That’s where that song came from. That real tripped out trancy sound had never been done in R&B, pop or any other music."
"This is the story of the journeyman bassist Doug Wimbish..."

Jackie McLean - Hartford Jazz Great - passed on Friday

Jackie McLeanOne of the truly great Jazz masters, Jackie McLean passed on Friday eve. I was amazed that the legendary McLean was teaching at th University of Hartford when I went to Art School there. I mean I didn't think that someone with his history and skills would be working with youths of my age.. I mean... why? But that was just part of who Mr. McLean was. He really believed in education and thrived in the enthusiasm of learning and feeling.

Dolly McLean and Jackie started the Artists Collective with that enthusiasm and I have totally respected and believe in the Artist's Collective's mission from my first knowledge of it. Back in my early days on the web I had decided to first put sites for organzations that I felt deserved more exposure. The Artist's Collective was one of the first web sites I ever posted. The Artist's Collective, the old Craftery Gallery, Judy Dworin Performance Ensemble and a few others were the first sites i put up for free as I could see no one else was going to to be funding sites for them.
The original Artist's Collective site on xenarts, done in 1995

I'm sure Dolly, Jackie's mentees, and the Artist's Collective will continue to help influence and educate young minds and spirits in a postive energy for many years to come.

Stephen Brown - Painter - talks about having a stroke

Stephen Pat Brown - Self PortraitFriend, artist, and professor at Hartford Art School, Stephen Brown had a stroke last year and has been working within his art to return to a sense of himself. I think there is great value in keeping awareness of everthing & everyone that is around us,... as much as we can.

I am posting a recent letter from Stephen Brown in hoping that it will help others, if nothing other than to remind fellow artists that we are all in this together. And that we are all so lucky to be able to make art at all, and how art and relationships have aided in Stephen's recovery.
---------

Stephen Pat Brown
On Oct 8 I suffered a stroke. I lost use of my left hand and have had difficulty with my right. I am right -handed. The stroke changed everything. I took so much for granted. I was afraid that I would never be able to make art again. I know that sounds dramatic, but it was and is my fear even today.

I also lost my sense of smell and taste. As a result I have had great difficulty in eating. All perfumes, scented soaps, cooking foods, make me ill. This may never be recovered. But, I can accept that, because the use of my hands has returned. Not the way I was, but I can use them. I can now grasp a brush and I can draw with pastel...

Felix Bronner - Oil Painter - Collages

In Balance IV - Felix Bronner One reviewer has characterized Felix Bronner's work as “in a controlled but playful style, not unlike Chagall’s two distinctive abstract works.”  Another speaks of Bronner’s abstractions as “complex in their compositions, but never visually overwhelming,” “charged with beautifully orchestrated colors,” “stunning and gentle.”
